Skid Steer Wheel Rims: Measure Fitment Before You Request a Quote

To identify skid steer wheel rims, start with the machine model and serial number, then record the tire size, rim diameter and bead-seat width, bolt count and bolt-circle diameter, center-pilot diameter, stud or bolt-hole size, offset or backspacing, disc orientation and clearance around the hub and machine. Add clear photographs and any stamped part number. A matching tire size or bolt count alone does not confirm fitment, so treat every quote as fitment review rather than universal compatibility.

Before removing or replacing anything, prepare one evidence package:

1. Identify the machine before measuring the wheel

The most reliable wheel-rim inquiry begins with the machine, not an online picture. Record the full model designation, product identification or serial number, and any axle, hub, tire or spacing option shown in the machine records.

Serial ranges matter because manufacturers can change components inside one model name. Bobcat’s OEM wheel-rim listing is one current example: it directs buyers to check machine serial-number applicability rather than relying only on the model label. That listing does not establish fitment for another wheel, brand or machine.

Photograph the identification plate and type the characters into the request. A photo reduces transcription errors, while typed text makes the information searchable. If the plate is missing or unreadable, state that limitation instead of guessing a model year or series.

Also record the wheel position and quantity. Front and rear rims may look alike, but configuration, spacing, hub or tire differences can change the review. Compare all four current wheels before assuming the installed set is original or identical.

2. Read the tire and rim as related but different parts

The tire sidewall is a useful starting point, but its size is not the complete rim specification. A skid steer tire marking describes the tire’s nominal fit relationship and construction; it does not tell you the hub pattern, center pilot or wheel offset.

Record the full sidewall string and photograph it square-on. Then inspect the rim for stamped dimensions and a manufacturer or part number. Clean only enough loose dirt to read the marking without removing evidence or damaging the surface.

Rim diameter is based on the bead-seat diameter, not the outer lip-to-lip diameter. Rim width is the distance between the bead seats, not the overall outside width across the flanges. Overall width can still be recorded as a supplementary dimension when it is labeled clearly.

  • State where the tape or caliper contacts the rim.
  • Use a scale photo to show the measurement reference.
  • Keep tire compatibility and machine fitment as separate checks.
  • Record damage when a bent flange or distorted wheel may change the measurement.

3. Record the mounting pattern completely

Two wheels can share the same number of bolt holes and still have different bolt circles, pilots, hole sizes or offsets. Capture all mounting dimensions rather than reporting only the bolt count.

For an even number of equally spaced holes, measure from the center of one hole to the center of the directly opposite hole. That is the bolt-circle diameter. Do not report the distance between adjacent holes as the bolt pattern.

For five-hole or uncertain patterns, use a bolt-circle template, the wheel drawing or a supplier-confirmed method. Include a photograph of the ruler or caliper in position because small errors can separate patterns that look identical in an angled photo.

Measure the large center opening and photograph how the current wheel locates on the hub. Also record the wheel-hole diameter and visible seat shape plus a verified stud or fastener reference when available. Do not infer a thread or fastener grade from appearance.

4. Measure offset and backspacing from a clear datum

Offset describes the position of the wheel mounting face relative to the rim centerline. Backspacing is a related physical measurement from a defined rim-edge plane to the mounting surface. Suppliers may ask for one or both, so label the method and sign convention rather than sending a bare number.

  • Place the removed wheel on a stable, flat surface with the measured side identified.
  • Lay a straightedge across the flange without resting it on a bent area.
  • Measure perpendicularly to the mounting face and photograph the setup.
  • State which side faces the machine and record overall rim width separately.
  • Do not reverse the rim or add a spacer from the comparison alone.

5. Check hub and machine clearance

A wheel can match the mounting holes but still interfere with the hub, axle housing, chaincase, brake components, frame, lift arms or tire. Inspect the existing assembly before removal and again with the wheel safely available for measurement.

Photograph the mounting face against the hub, pilot and hub projection, inside-rim clearance, closest tire-to-machine points, valve-stem access and any witness marks, polished areas, cuts or paint loss that suggest contact. Use a ruler or scale in close views.

If the wheel is bent or the tire is damaged, disclose the condition instead of using a distorted assembly as the only reference. A matching mounting pattern does not resolve clearance or machine-load questions.

6. Preserve part numbers and comparison photos

Part numbers can narrow the search faster than a measurement, but they still need context. Photograph every stamp, label, casting mark and handwritten fleet number. Type the exact characters and identify where the marking appears. Do not assume a fleet number is an OEM part number.

Use repeatable views: whole machine and wheel position, tire sidewall, outside face, inside face and disc, bolt pattern with scale, center pilot with scale, offset setup, hub and closest clearance, stamped markings and visible damage or modifications.

If comparing two wheels, place them in the same orientation and use the same measurement references. A side-by-side photograph is useful only when camera angle does not hide differences in dish or mounting-face position.

7. Avoid common identification mistakes

Matching only the tire size leaves the hub pattern and offset unverified. Matching only the bolt count leaves the bolt circle, pilot, hole size and mounting-face location unverified. Measuring outer lips as the nominal size produces a precise-looking but different dimension.

One angled photo also distorts circles and dish. Use square-on views, a scale and one wider orientation image. Finally, do not assume the current wheel is original: used machines can have mixed wheels, repaired centers, spacers or altered tires.

A catalog model list is useful discovery evidence, not final approval. Preserve the supplier’s serial, configuration and measurement assumptions with the quote.

8. Ask the quote to repeat its fitment evidence

A fitment-focused quote should identify the evidence used and what remains unverified:

  • Machine and serial information considered.
  • Intended wheel position and quantity.
  • Tire-size relationship and rim bead-seat dimensions.
  • Bolt count, bolt circle, center pilot and hole dimensions.

  • Part-number cross-reference and its source, when used.
  • Known hub and machine-clearance assumptions.
  • Any item still requiring confirmation before installation.

Are skid steer wheel rims universal?
